A glorious Norman Castle built in 1177 on the shores of Belfast Lough. John de Courcy, the youngest son of a Somerset knight, led his army consisting of 22 knights and 300 foot soldiers from Dublin, eventually settling in Carrickfergus. Between the years of 1177 and 1181 he built his castle. However his self proclaimed status of the 'Prince of Ulster' and his growing power began to unnerve the King, so he sent another Norman knight to take over the castle.
Carrickfergus Castle has had many inhabitants, however from the 18th century for 750 years to come the castle became a prison, armoury, magazine and occupied the military. The castle is now considered an ancient monument and guided tours are available daily.
