Mussenden Temple

This temple was built in 1785 as a summer library for the Bishop of Derry. Its architecture was inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli, Italy, and is dedicated to the memory of the Bishops cousin Frideswide Mussenden.

The temple is located in the Downhill Demesne, just outside of Castlerock, Co. Londonderry. Panoramic views can be seen westwards over Downhill Strand and across to Donegal. To the east, on a clear day you can see as far as Portrush and fair head. Substantial work has been carried out by the National Trust to stabilise the cliff, to prevent loosing this palatial building to the sea.

Approximate admission cost to Downhill Demesne and Hezlett House: Adult £4.70, Child £2.35, Family £11.75
